The American biotechnology company Monsanto says it has decided not to develop what is known as "terminator gene" technology for its genetically-modified crops, per the BBC (October 4, 1999). Terminator genes prevent crops from producing fertile seeds - which means that farmers growing them would have to buy new seeds each year, rather than saving part of the harvest to plant next year's crop.
